Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais church of Paris

The church Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais of Paris , generally known under the name of church Saint-Gervais , is a Parisian church located in the district of the Marais, with the intersection of the street of the Town hall and the street of the Bars, in the 4 {{E}} district, behind the Town hall. Built on the foundations of the first known building Right Bank in Paris, namely a Basilique which one finds the existence as of the end of the 4th century, it constitutes of this fact oldest Paroisse on Right Bank of the the Seine.

The duet of saints Holy Gervais and Saint Protais is very popular at the time of the foundation of this church, and one counts many foundations of churches under their invocation during this period (in the neighborhoods of the 16th century).

The construction of the current church, started in 1494, proceeded over one approximately 150 years period. Even if the architecture of the Saint-Gervais church is of aspect overall Gothic, the frontage of the architects Solomon de Brosse and especially Clément Métezeau, completed in 1621, is inspired by the classicism French.

The Saint-Gervais church accommodated, during more than two centuries, starting from 1653, a great dynasty of French musicians: the Couperin. The Organ of Louis and François Couperin is still present today inside the church.
