Saint-Germain (Éghezée)

Saint-Germain (in Walloon Sint-Djermwin ) is a section of the common Belgian of Éghezée located in Walloon region in the Province of Namur.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

Etymology

The name comes from holy Germain, bishop of Auxerre. It was supposed that, as for Saint-Denis, the village would have been rested by emigrants started from Paris, at the time Carolingien (750 until the 10th century) and would have been fixed in this area, by pointing out places which theirs were familiar.

Surface

Saint-Germain has a surface of 706 hectares.

Population

March 14th 2006 there were 217 women and 238 men with Saint-Germain, is a total of 455 inhabitants.

Remarkable sites

The church

The church is dedicated to the saint of the village, bishop of Auxerre (378-448), apostle of the Gaulle and of England, it would have built at this place a vault and would have made spout out or blessed a source (see fountain of Saint-Germain).

The church is of Romance style , it dates from the 12th century, its Master current furnace bridge is the primitive furnace bridge updated in 1902. Its first rebuilding goes back to 1700 and it was restored and increased in 1902 and 1911.

By looking at it laterally, one sees well the older part and the “new” side of the church.

In 1949 one classified the church (turn and central nave) like monument, the wall enclosing and the cemetery was classified like site.

The presbytery

This dwelling was built at the 18th century, painted out of ocher. It was converted into farm with the French revolution and then into manor at the 19th century.

The fountain

It is located street of the Brewery.

Saint Germain would have, according to the legend (stained glasses of the church), makes spout out a miraculous fountain at this place. As one also allots to Germain saint the cure of several children, the water of the fountain to the reputation to cure the weak children or who are long in walking.

There exists in more one cistern equipped with a pump. Each year, Sunday which follows on July 30th, one blesses the children there after the mass. A habit wanted that one extends the linen of the fountain, the part of the linen which was inserted in water indicated the place of the “evil of Germain saint” (habit who comes from a miracle of 446).

Farms

  • Firm of the Mill : street Montulet. Built at the 19th century. It owes its name with an old water mill.

  • Firm of Sitine : behind the church. The home dates from the 17th century. The frontage is painted in white.
  • Firm of the Lime : street of Stampia. Firm built at the 18th century. It belongs to the old dependence of the abbey of Géronsart. It had to be repaired at the beginning of the 19th century.

The castle of Jennevaux

Located street of Jennevaux, it was rebuilt at the 19th century. The castle out of bricks and blue stones remains sober. The field is supplemented by a vault and a pond.

In March 2006, the castle is rented in a center for handicapped people, the Asbl “Jennevaux-Meetings”.
