Saint-Germain-the-Châtelet

Saint-Germain-the-Châtelet is a common of France, in the department of the Territoire of Belfort and belonging to the canton of Rougemont-the-Castle.

The village is located at 12km in the east of Belfort, near the RN83 in direction of Colmar and is spread out with the foot of a wooded hill (the Wood of Châtelet) to the foot of the the Vosges of the South, at an average altitude of 400 Mr. the territory of common has a surface of 536 ha and its population in 1999 was of 336 inhabitants

Its activity now primarily agricultural and residential is supplemented by some trade. A mill then a mechanical weaving (as from 1856) exploited the hydraulic power of the brook of Bourg supplemented by a contribution of the river the Madeleine. Of 1913 at a few years before the Second world war, a branch of the railroad of local interest connecting Belfort to Rougemont-the-Castle, crosses the village.

The name of the village is mentioned for the first time in 1388. A church existed already in 1573 but depended then on the parish of Phaffans. Rebuilt towards 1734, it was devoted to Saint Germain of Auxerre in 1749 by the bishop of Basle. In 1782 the parish was attached to the diocese of Besancon. It entirely includes/understands Bethonvilliers since 1630, Felon starting from 1766 and the hamlet of Errues (commune of Menoncourt) since 1767.
