Geography

The commune of Saint-Germain-of-the-Barn is in the south-west of the Plaine of Versailles, with approximately 18 kilometers in the west of Versailles and with approximately 15 kilometers in the North-East of Montfort-l' Amaury, the chief town of canton.

The communes bordering are Thiverval-Oil cake in the North-West, Plaisir in the east, Neauphle-the-Castle in the south, Villiers-Saint-Frederic in the east and Beynes with the nord-est.

The communal territory extends on the northern slope from the valley from Ru from Maldroit, tributary of Right Bank of the Mauldre, with the foot of the Butte-témoin on which the town of Neauphle-the-Castle is established. It is relatively broken inclined marked towards north. Its northern limit follows primarily the course of the Ru of Maldroit. This territory is urbanized little (15%) and practically not wooded. It is devoted primarily to agriculture (cereals, colza).

The habitat is gathered in two distinct boroughs, the village of Saint-Germain-of-the-Barn itself (the Borough), located about at the center of the territory of the commune and sheltering the town hall, and at the south the hamlet of Châtron, staged on the northern slope of the hillock of Neauphle-the-Castle, in edge of this commune and Plaisir.
It acts in both cases of houses, built, apart from the old core of the village, in relatively recent Lotissement S.

The commune is served by the communal roadway system which gives access to two more important axes: the secondary roads D 11 (Saint-Cyr-the School with Bréval) with the south and D 119 (Thiverval-Oil cake with Hargeville) in north.

It is in addition crossed by several infrastructures which do not serve it directly:

  • the two railways Paris - Mantes-the-Pretty via Pleasure-Oil cake and Paris-Dreux whose junction is located in the north-eastern angle of the commune and who diverge towards the west, respectively towards the north and the south of the valley of Mauldre,
  • the Aqueduc of Avre west-east directed and who passes immediately to the south of the village,
  • a double Ligne with high voltage west-east also directed in the south of the commune.

The commune is also crossed by a Sentier of great excursion, the GR. 1 (turn of ïle-of-France).

History

The origin of Saint-Germain-of-the-Barn is not known. But, it is estimated that it is between IXe and XIe century that the name of Saint-Germain (496-576), appointed bishop of Paris to the Life century by the king Childebert (wire of Clovis) in 555, was given to him. A sarcophagus of this time was found in the commune.

The Barn probably comes from the existence during several centuries of a whole of buildings built according to architecture cistercian. It was composed of several barns and a principal building of dwelling where placed Converts Brothers. Another origin could come from the existence of a barn intended to contain the products of the dîme which was a tax representing a tenth of all that grew and was born for the benefit from the lords and the clergy. It was the place where the taxes were collected. This privilege gave place, as of the Moyen-âge, to profitable transactions, sometimes irregular, that Charlemagne denounced. Before 1179

At the time Gallic, Saint-Germain-of-the-Barn was located at the extreme west of the territory of the Parisii . The border with that of the Carnutes was materialized by the Mauldre which takes its source with Coignières (169 meters of altitude). Its course extends on 30 kilometers to the Seine (18 meters of altitude).

XIIIe century

The stronghold of Saint-Germain depended on the baronnie of Neauphle-the-Castle and was managed by the lords of Chateron. They lived the current hamlet of Chatron located on the culminating point of the commune.

XVe century

Mathurin de Harville, born in 1459, was lord of the Barn. The king Louis XI yields, in 1450, the chatellery of Neauphle-the-Castle with François 1st, duke of Brittany, which is thus attached to the county of Montfort. Charles VIII, on May 6th, 1484, declares that Saint-Germain de Morainville is joined together in the County of Montfort.

XVIIe century

May 12th, 1682, Pierre de Bellièvre sells to André Potier, knight, lord of Novion ( Novigentum ) and adviser at the Parliament, Marquisat de Grignon and the Seigniory of Saint-Germain-of-the-Barn.

XVIIIe century

In 1789, the Revolutionists wanted to make disappear all that pointed out the Dîme. Many documents were destroyed and the village changed several times of name. March 28th, 1789, Nicolas Hautdecoeur, plowman born in Vicq in 1729, was elected appointed with the National Assembly like representative of the Third-State. The church Saint Martin was quickly destroyed shortly after the profanation and the destruction of the royal tombs of the Saint-Denis basilica on August 8th, 1793. The parish is attached since 1793 to that of Villiers-Saint-Frederic.

XIXe century

In 1814, the commune counts nothing any more but 169 inhabitants because of the bleeding of the Napoleonean wars. Symbols of the Old Mode in 1789, the grounds attached to the cure were confiscated and sold like national goods. To the Restoration, the commune will become another symbol: that of the Revolution. Nothing any more will then be done for it.

XXIe century

At the beginning of XXIe century, two farms still exist. Only one is really exploited. Other agricultural surfaces are always exploited by owners not living the village.
