History
Saint-Germain is built on the ruins of an important Roman city, ruined by the Barbarians in second the III century half. This city had succeeded itself one of Celtic village, built with the foot of the oppida which crowned the top of the Mount-Rivel. One generally agrees to regard as a monument of the worship druidic the block of stone called the Pierre-Lite, whom one meets in wood Fresse, between Saint-Germain and Mournans. This stone, of which there remains only one section of 2,50m height, was as remarkable by its dimensions and its form as by the legends of which it was the object. It is exactly similar to the menhirs of Brittany. The scattered remains of the Gallo-Roman city which was called Placentia, if one believe an old tradition of it, cover a ground of a great extent. One found on his site bronze Minerve, a bronze vase, burials, medals which start with the type of the colony of Nimes, and finish in Trajan-Dèce, of the foundations of buildings, a multitude broken tiles with edges, pottery, a head of statuette of woman, hones decomposition, of the vaults a hidden dwelling, a furnace bridge feldspathic granite of the mountains of Auvergne, and a grinding stone of the volcanic grounds of the same country, called stone of Valvic, half of a flute tibicinienne out of ivory, large ivory pins also, intended for the hairstyle of the hair, a surgical instrument, which was useful with the practice of the bleedings, remains of armilles, a fragment of sphere, out of glass gilded, tests of vases out of glass on one which one read: Campaniodius, remains of ballot box out of wooden with reliefs, a handle out of bronze, perfectly engraved, and a crowd, ancient menus objects. Mr. Doctor Germain, of Saline, collected many of these invaluable remainders. The points which restore the most remains, are in the plain of Sérilly, between the current village and the bridge of Grateroche and in Hermettes. This territory was remainder crossed by a Roman way, which went down from Pontarlier in Champagnole. The town of Placentia, like the majority of the Roman cities, was divided into two parts: the high city occupied the top of Montrivel, and the low city extended in the plain with the foot from this mountain. One loses the traces of his existence since his ruin until the beginning of XIIe century.Seigniory.
Saint-Germain formed a particular, dismembered seigniory that of Montrivel, and raising however directly of that the saline ones. Left-handed person II of Commercy, lord of Castle-Unpleasant and Montrivel, made of it homage to Jean de Chalon, lord d' Arlay, in 1286, and transmitted it to Guillemette, his/her daughter, marries of Guillaume of holy-cross, knight, lord of Skirt-stone. This lady sold it in 1315, in Jean of Trawl-net-Arlay 1st. Jean of Trawl-net-Arlay II, furious of the attacks which carried each day Eudes IV, duke and count de Bourgogne, with the feudal privileges of the province, and about to declare the war to him, made homage of the seigniory of Saint-Germain and Montrivel, with Humbert II, dolphin of the Viennese. He exposed himself By there to the confiscation of his strongholds, but it was believed enough powerful to be able to fight with its suzerain. Since the acquisition of 1315, this ground did not cease being a member of the baronnie of Montrivel and did not have other lords only those of this last place.
Charter of franknesses.

It appears that this Savaric was one of the knights attached to the brilliant court of the lords Salins. Conrad of saint-Germain, probably wire of the precedent, provost of the church of Whorl, usually accompanied Otton, count de Bourgogne, and appeared like first witness in a donation made by this sovereign, in, 1199, with the abbey of Balerne. Jean of saint-Germain, knight, had part of the stronghold of Rabeur in 1327.
Priory.
The priory of Saint-Germain, known as in Wood, rose between the mountain of Fresse and Vannoz. He probably went back to Ve century, and had to be established with an aim of dissipating the idolatric practices which remained around Pierre - Lite. He was occupied by monks about Saint-Benoît and was linked, with the XIV' century, the office of provost of the collegiate church of Neufchâtel in Switzerland. Church.
The first title which mentions it is the charter by which, Ansenic archbishop of Besancon, gave in 1132, with the cathedral of Midsummer's Day, certain royalties were due for him by this church and that of Mièges. Patronage belonged to the prior about it. The current building, rebuilt in 1770, is dedicated to Germain saint, which one celebrates the festival on July 24th. It is directed and is composed of a bell-tower, a nave, two vaults, a chorus, a sanctuary and a sacristy. The bell-tower, rebuilt in 1790, is crowned by a quadrangular arrow tiled; the nave and the vaults are arched with full-clotheshanger; the vaults are decorated with edges cutting itself diagonally, and transverse ribs resting on consoles; the chorus is lower and narrower than the nave, and arched in not very marked warhead. This church has relics of German Saint and a fragment of the true Cross. The vault dedicated to holy Philomène, is the object, of a pilgrimage. It is ensured that nine people having died in only one week, following a malignant fever, the inhabitants are reflected under the protection of this holy, and that the epidemic ceased immediately. One Re marks in the interior of the monument a beautiful monstrance in vermeil, three beautiful glosses and several tables, which are not deprived of merit.
