Saint-Genis-Laval draws its name from Saint-Genis or Genest, Roman actor martyrized under Dioclétien. At the beginning of the 13th century, to distinguish it from the other villages of the same name, one added to him the qualitative one of “valley”, which at the 15th century was transformed into “Laval”.
The first mention of Saint-Genis goes back to 807: it is a donation of the Archevêque Leidrade at the hospitals of Saint-Romain and Saint-Genis. It is in 984 that it is made mention for the first time of the Paroisse of Saint-Genis like belonging to the properties of the archbishop of Lyon, in the enumeration of the 52 parishes of the Église Métropolitaine of Lyon. Gradually, the archbishop dislocated his possessions in favor of the Chanoine S of the Chapter of Midsummer's Day. It is there them which made build the castle on the highest part of the village, or is currently the church. At the 13th century, they made strengthen the village and in 1447 the enclosure was remade. The current configuration of the center of the city still shows, between the layout of the medieval borough of the remainders of the enclosure, an old tower in the Jardin of the cure (a long time Prison); the Northern door (restored at the 18th century) and a half-turn enchased in houses, street of the Markets.
The Canons of Midsummer's Day had, with the territory of Bush hammer, a strong house where the Pape Clément V rested in 1306, after its crowning in the Saint-Just church in Lyon. There remain nothing about it. As of the 13th century, the Pèlerinage with Our-Lady-of-Beaunant attracted crowd: there remains a Chapelle rebuilt at the end of last century to the site of the miraculous source. In November 1434, Saint-Genis was occupied by the Bourguignons. The castle of Beauregard, splendid residence of the banker Florentin, Thomas de Gadagne, accepted the visit of the king Charles IX and the court of France in 1564. Castle itself, it remains only some sections of wall, but the gardens in terraces and the Nymphée of the 16th century still give an idea of the beauty of the place. It is a municipal park today.
At the time of the League, the Duc of Nemours was confined in Saint-Genis with his army and it is there that it signed a trève with Alphonse d' Oranano, lieutenant of the king de Navarre, on May 25th, 1592. In 1764, the road of Lyon - Saint-Etienne was created. During the revolution, Saint-Genis-Laval took to the name of “Genis the Patriot”. It is with the Château of the Tower (built by the family of Villars and which one can see the monumental perron) which was installed the seat of the court of the executive Directory of the district of the Countryside of the Freed Commune (Lyon) chaired by the actor Dumanoir. In 1853, the Brothers Mariste S settle in Saint-Genis, in the Dumontet property, which will become the Head office of the congregation. The Arquebus of the hermitage, vulnerary well-known in Lyon will be manufactured there until in 1962.
Also let us recall that the August 20th 1944, in the fort of Lorette, were massacred 120 prisoners of the Fort of Montluc, under the orders of Klaus Barbie.
