Saint-Genest-Lerpt

Saint-Genest-Lerpt is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Its inhabitants are called the lerptiens.
Cité close to Saint Etienne, it was in the past a cradle of the Rubanerie, sheltering many hand braid makers, name given to the weavers of Ruban. It is today a residential city in the suburbs of Etienne Saint.

History

Sanctus Genesius Lerpt is written as of XIe century. What is sure, it is the reference to Genesius which will give Genoa, Genest, Genis, Genys, etc… Genesius was a Lyons bishop very révéré for a life of holiness. The Genest orthography appears only at the XVIIIe century. Lerpt, used as of XIe century would be a derivative of Lerm which would have indicated a poor ground with thin pastures and forests.

The commune absorbed in 1828, Landuzière-Cizeron.

  • Castle of the Little face (or Colcombet castle) which shelters the hotel private college “the Revival” since 1995.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Antoine Neyron mayor of Saint-Etienne in 1790 made build the castle of the Little face on its grounds.
  • Jean-Baptiste Buisson mayor of Saint-Etienne in 1865 gave by will 50.000 francs to the commune of Saint-Genest-Lerpt for the drain the fountains and the wash-house. In 1911, the grateful commune of Saint-Genest-Lerpt raised a monument to him on the place Carnot, the bust bronzes some being realized by Joseph Lamberton.
