Saint-Galmier is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Its inhabitants is called Baldomériens.

Geography

History

Saint-Galmier was born during the time Gallo-Roman. That was checked by the discovery of Roman Thermes not far from the source Badoit. At the time, it is supposed that the city named Vicus Auditiacus. From now on the city rises on a Colinne at the point of Western meeting of the Mounts of the Lyonese and plain of the Forez. This one dominates the valley of the Coise of approximately 60 meters in height. A church dedicated to Galmier saint, replacing two antériaux medieval buildings, comprising three Naves and side chapels dates from the XVème century. It rested against the Donjon Château which is from now on a turn-bell-tower and of which the foundations are used now for the " nouveau" bell-tower built with the XXème century

Saint-Galmier owes his celebrity with his mineral springs, known since the Gallo-Roman time but it is at the 19th century that the city sees its fame growing thanks to this natural gas mineral water launched by Auguste Saturnin Badoit.

Places and monuments

  • a hippodrome created in 1899. With a grass track of 1330m and a track of trot of 1220m, the hippodrome of Saint-Galmier called Joseph-Desjoyaux hippodrome, name of a former mayor of the commune, is the only enlightened one of the Rhone-Alps area.

  • Saint-Galmier is known for his source of aerated water, exploited by Danone, distributed in France under the mark Badoit.

  • the original name of the name of water Badoit is Fontfort.
  • Thus the city during the Révolution was famous Fontfortville.
  • It is in the Holy-Timothée parish that took place funerals of famous the Cycliste Roger Rivière. From now on, there exists a Gymnase with its name.
