Saint-Gabriel-of-Valcartier
Located at the north of the town of Quebec in MRC of the Jacques-Cartier, the municipality of Saint-Gabriel-with-Valcartier occupies a surface of 441.17 km ². It is with approximately 25 kilometers of the downtown area of Quebec. Inhabited spaces concentrate mainly along the Jacques-Cartier river and of road 371. Saint-Gabriel-of-Valcartier is located at the foot of splendid the Laurentides.
The first colonists built in 1812 a road which connected the Jacques-Cartier river to Loretteville. They built their residences, of the sawmills, the mills with flour and the churches catholic and Protestant woman.
In 1815, four business men of Quebec are John Neilson, Andrew Stuart, Louis Moquin and Nicholas Vincent bought most of the grounds belonging to the Fathers Jésuites.
Saint-Gabriel-of-Valcartier was recognized like Municipalité starting from 1845 and civil erection dates from the May 18th 1861 when the municipality was divided in order to form the municipalities of Saint-Gabriel-in-Valcartier and of Western Saint-Gabriel. In October 1985, is 124 years later, these two municipalities amalgamated to become the Municipality of Saint-Gabriel-of-Valcartier.
The main features of Saint-Gabriel-of-Valcartier are: its family spirit, harmonious relations between the english-speaking and French-speaking people, the collaboration of all the residents and a strongly developed Community spirit.
The economic main activities are the industry of the breeding of the poultries and the tourist center Village Holidays Valcartier, the largest watery park of Canada in summer, and the greatest center of plays of winter in North America. Moreover, the economic activity is strongly influenced by the presence of an important military garrison, the Garnison Valcartier (military garrison of the Canadian Armed forces).
The village already sheltered a center of ski, the " Development Valcartier inc" sold later with the Valcartier Lodge . Today, it is a private secondary school, the secondary school Mount-Saint-Sacrament.
