Saint-Etienne Cathedral of Agde
The Cathédrale of Agde is dedicated to holy Etienne.
It was built at the end of the XIIe century on the foundations of old a Romance church of the Ve century. The city was a évêché of the Ve century until in 1790,
Its principal characteristic is to be built in black stone volcanic coming from the Holy Mont Wolf, which accentuates the imposing character of its Fortifications.
Here the description which is made by it by the tourist bureau of Agde:
" This charming strengthened church is the work of an unknown architect. Rebuilt in XIIe century on the site of the old temple of Diane, this splendid monument, with its walls from 2 to 3 meters thickness and its 35 meters height bell-tower of square form, acting as keep, is a true esthetic and technical prowess. Cut and built in basalt, like much of buildings of the town of Agde, you will notice inside a very pretty polychrome marble retable of the XVIIe century and its organ of style baroque"
