the Basilica Saint-Epvre of the Old woman-City of Nancy is a religious building of style Néo-gothique builds at the 19th century in Pierre d' Euville, in the historical heart of the capital of the dukes of Lorraine.
The basilica is dedicated to Saint Epvre, bishop of Toul.
History
The duke Thierry II of Lorraine establishes the parish church in 1080. Between 1436 and 1451, the building is entirely rebuilt in the Gothic style, whose bell-tower was also used as turn of duty since it was the point highest of the medieval city. The church is demolished in 1863, the bell-tower-turn will still survive to him a few years.The parish was entrusted to the Congrégation Oratory of Saint Philippe Néri.
Current building
Prosper Morey, the architect appointed to rebuild the building, chooses a neo-gothic style which allows a very good integration in the historical center of Nancy. The first stone is posed in May 1864 while since 1865, Monseigneur Trouillet undertakes to collect gifts to finance the construction of this prestigious project.November 26th, 1874, the church is high with the row of minor Basilique by the pope Pie IX.
The Saint-Epvre basilica is classified historic building since 1999. The combined effect of the storm of December 1999 and pollution has obliged with important work of restoration for several years.
Structure
The basilica is built in the style Gothic with lancet and present of the honourable proportions: the arrow points to 87 m for a building of a hundred meters length and a nave with 24 meters of the ground. The project accepted besides the praises of Purple-the-Duke.The monumental staircase is a gift of the Emperor François-Joseph Ier of Austria, heir to the houses of Austria and Lorraine as well as the stained glasses the representative with that his wife (appeared under the features of saint-François and holy-Elisabeth). Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie also offered stained glasses (Saint-Louis and holy-Eugenie).
74 canopies illuminate the basilica like three rosettes. The nave is decorated with paintings and with mosaics and the unit is furnished with furniture Viennese.
