Saint-Elzéar-of-Témiscouata

Saint-Elzéar-with-Témiscouata is a municipality in the regional Municipalité of county of the Témiscouata to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent.

Detached from the parishes of Saint-Louis-of-ha! Ha! and of Saint-David-in Escourt, the parish of Saint-Elzéar will be the subject of a canonical erection in 1931, whereas the municipality which took again the denomination of it is created only in 1938. The abbot Elzéar-Joseph Roy, born in 1870, ensuring the service road of the new mission of 1907 to 1911, it appeared to go from oneself to allot his first name to this one at the time of his accession to the statute of parish. He, inter alia functions, governed the destinies of the parishes of Mount-Louis (1897-1904) and of Saint-Louis-of-ha! Ha! (1904).

January 19th, 2002, the name of the municipality becomes Saint-Elzéar-of-Témiscouata.

In 1950, a big fire of forest shaved a good part of the locality, involving the exodus of several inhabitants and the displacement of the village which is rebuilt a few kilometers more in north.

Located at the variation of the main roads of circulation, on a not very fertile territory and which present relatively little attraction for tourism and holiday, the municipality of Saint-Elzéar-of-Témiscouata strongly devitalized during the 50 last years. Populated of 1207 inhabitants in 1951, the municipality is inhabited more today only by 335 people, which represents a fall of population of more than 72%.
