The borough of Saint-Coulitz drew the attention of the media in 1989 when Kofi Yamgnane, originating in the Togo is elected mayor of the commune; it is famous being one of the first black mayors in Metropolitan France, in a commune in addition without black population; another black, Raphaël Elizé, Socialist to him also, had been elected mayor of Sablé-sur-Sarthe in 1929.
