Saint-Contest is a common French, located in the department of the Calvados and the area Basse-Normandie.

Geography

The commune is divided into hamlets: the Borough, Buron, Malon, Galmanche and Bitot. Saint-Contest is a commune bordering on the north of Caen, located on the plate of Caen.

Economy

The commune gathers nearly one hundred companies, seedbeds, market gardenings, agriculture, zones of activities: " The Barbey" field; and " Athéna" park; , seat of HPE (Housing public sector Carries Europe), departmental laboratory Franck Duncombe.

It is the seat of the Chamber of commerce and industry of Caen since 2002. It manages the marina, the wearing of Caen Ouistreham and the fishing port of Port-in-Bessin as well as the Aéroport of Caen - Carpiquet.

History

Archaeological excavations carried out in the hamlet of Bitot by the Museum of Normandy in 1984 made it possible to show that this territory was occupied by the Gallic ones (ceramics of the period of Tène III. Traces of Gallo-Roman occupation were also put at the day.

Saint Contest was bishop of Bayeux between 480 and 513, he gave his name to the parish as of VIIè century, then with the commune. The inhabitants name Saint-contestois. The church was built of XIe in XIVe century. Gautier d' Aignaux, lord of Saint-Contest, made gift of the church to the abbey of Ardenne in 1207.

The Charnwood operation is the allied offensive in the west of Caen which was to release the city. July 7th, 1944, the Germans resist in spite of the many bombardments. The 59e Staffordshire Division and the tanks of the 1st East Riding Yeomanry lead the offensive to the ground. The Canadian soldiers face the S of the 12th SS-Panzer-Division in Buron. The reinforcement of a company of the 5th Battaillon East Lancashire Fusiliers is not enough. The following day, July 8th, the attack begins again with the support of Sherman flame thrower. July 9th, the city is released after bloody combat. The village and the church were very damaged. Steles point out these engagements, in particular that of the place of Canada with Buron where is held a ceremony each July 9th in the presence of Canadian veterans.
