Saint-Clement-of-Whales

Saint-Clement-of-Whales is a common French, located on the Ile de Ré in the department of the Charente-Maritime and the area Poitou-Charentes.

Its name comes from the many strandings of Cetacea on its beaches until the beginning of the 20th century.

Its inhabitants is the Villagers, Villageoises.

Geography

Village (regrouping of several boroughs, Gillieux, the Chub, Cheating, Griveau…) with the Western point of the Ile de Ré.
  • No port. A headlight with ground (Headlight of the whales) , one at sea (Headlight of the Whale-calves) .
  • Very beautiful beaches in North and the South. Lock with fish visible with tide bases.
  • Strong presence of Blockhouse of the Atlantic Wall (Second world war). Certain scenes of the film " the longest day " were turned on the Northern beach.

  • Of the name " of the Whales ":
    • Pline Old the speaks about 300 whales failed on a point of the Gulf of Aquitaine.
    • 1522, Madam of Tremoîlle requires 7 or 800 books of whales of Thibaud Maroys its receiver of " Isle de Rhé ".
    • 1582, December 31st, the Captain Bruneau de Rivedoux speaks about a stranding.
    • 1584, Nicolas Herbin, notary of the seigniories of Ars and Loix (see " Histoire" page Ile de Ré) , speaks about a stranding of Baleine.
    • 1586, Nicolas Herbin, stranding with the point of Ars (see " Histoire" Ile de Ré page) .
    • 1680, mid-February, Jehan Seignette, doctor with the La Rochelle, observation and dissection a " whale of the basques" of 15 meters.
