Saint-Candles

Saint-Candles is a common Suisse of the Canton of Vaud, located in the District of Moudon.

History

St-candles is certainly one of the places of Jorat since longest inhabited. Already in 1154, one discovers in the files the old name of St-Cereus or St-Sergins. But the vestiges of a Roman sanctuary certainly dedicated to the sources, testifies to a past even more remote. According to some to say, there would have even been a castle, castle called castle of Molard, built by the Romans and destroyed by Alémanes, confirming by there this thesis. After being itself called St-Cierie in 1227 and St-Ciriacus in 1228, the name changed with the passing of years to be called finally St-Candles, at an unfortunately unknown date. The consonances of this name are related to St-Cyriaque, patriarch of Constantinople from 596 to 610 after J. - C., to which the inhabitants dedicated a vault built on the site of the current church, which it, date of 1876. We find the effigy of this saint on our communal armorial bearings, this last dominating a fabulous animal, symbol of the demon dominated by St-Cyriaque.
