Saint-Césaire

Saint-Césaire is a city in the regional Municipalité of county of Rouville to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Montérégie.

History

The new town of Saint-Césaire was created on January 26th, 2000. It is resulting from the regrouping of the town of Saint-Césaire and the municipality of the parish of Saint-Césaire. Populated towards the beginning of the XIXe century, the extreme poverty of the inhabitants of this time as well as the need for a constant work to clear the ground were worth at the place the nickname “Holy-Misery” (copied on “Saint-Césaire”). The foundation of the village goes back to 1822 and the parish, it, at 1833. Dissolved in 1847, the village is restored in 1855. Alfred Bessette, who was going to become celebrates it Frère Andre (1845-1937) of the Oratoire Saint-Joseph, lived in Saint-Césaire of 1854 to 1860. The village obtains the statute of city in 1962. At the XIXe century, Saint-Césaire was the site of very an agricultural significant market every saturday, where the traders of everywhere, even from Montreal, came to get the products of the surrounding parishes for it, mainly of the flour, the grains and the animals.

Geography

Located at a score of kilometers in the west of Granby and the south of Saint-Hyacinthe, the parish of origin, Saint-Césaire, was attached to the seigniory of Yamaska. The territory is located in a plain, between the river Yamaska and the Rougemont mount.

Toponymy

Its name probably comes from holy Césaire (470 - 542), bishop of Arles in 503 and Primat of Gaules in 514. In the past, one identified the places under name “Burtonville”, allotted by the lord Pierre-Dominique Debartzch (1782 - 1846), in memory of the one of his English friends called Burton.
