Saint-Brieuc was a city a long time where three languages coexisted, the gallo, the Breton one and French. The progressive obliteration of the gallo and Breton with the profit of only French occurred during the years 1950.
It seems that the Breton one was spoken in the country briochin until worms the year 1200. Thereafter, a Romance language, the gallo, was essential in the campaigns on the neighborhoods of Saint-Brieuc, while the city became itself trilingual, undoubtedly by economic utility.
Place of markets and episcopal city, Saint-Brieuc was indeed during seven centuries a meeting place of populations originating in the campaigns gallophones and Breton-speaking. The bishops and the noble ones of Penthièvre were probably as for them already French-speaking at the end of XIIIème century, just like the Dukes of Brittany. In 1636, certain Dubuisson-Aubenay indicates in its route of Brittany that half of the inhabitants knows the Breton language in addition to French. Confusions are however very frequent at the time between gallo and Breton, so that this observation is historically reliable.
