Places and monuments
The Abbey of Fontdouce: The Abbey is a single case in the area taking into account the buildings which still exist: if the abbey church were destroyed, the places of life of the monks, them, remained in state. The monastery is rested by the Benedictines in 1111. It counts with its apogee a hundred monks, then rocks gradually in the lapse of memory starting from the Wars of religion. Sold like “National Good” after the Revolution, it belongs to the same family since nearly two centuries. The Abbey of Fontdouce was used as farm until in 1970, the monastic buildings, partly hidden under one fill meter, are used at the same time of wine storehouses, hangars or handing-over. As from 1970, the current owners, taken by the passion of the old stones, undertake a series of excavations intended for the restoration of the Abbey of Fontdouce. They gradually make find at the Abbey, year after year, part of its splendor of origin. They revive the very beautiful chapter house and the Gothic visiting room, the two superimposed Romance vaults and several other vestiges. This whole of buildings testifies in an original way of the many transformations which the site underwent with the wire of time. In addition to its conventual buildings, the attraction of Fontdouce is also due to its environment.
