The saint-Bernard is a Race large Chien S of Montagne, often drawn up like dogs of research in Avalanche. The popular imagery affuble of a brandy small cask fixed on the neck which would be intended to reinvigorate the victims of the cold.

Their name comes from the old people's home of the Large-Saint-Bernard (the Alps Suisse S), where they were used by the Moine S for the research of the travellers in Hiver. Expensive to inform and maintain, they are more and more largely replaced for this type of task by other more common races like the German Berger.

The old people's home of the Large-Saint-Bernard sheltered until in 2004 a breeding of dogs saint-Bernard, to maintain the tradition and to increase the tourist interest of the site. Since January 200 5, the Congregation of the Canons of the Large-Saint-Bernard however gave the load of the kennels and of the breeding of the saint-Bernard to the Barry Foundation based with Martigny, on the Swiss side of the road of the coll a Museum of the saint-Bernard was also created there.

Cinema

Following the example Dalmatien popularized by the Cartoon, the 101 dalmatiens , this race of dogs knew the favors of the public thanks to the cinema:
  • the short-measuring of Mickey Mouse, the Mountaineers (1936)
  • the Québécois film with great success, the War of tuques the (1984).
  • the film Beethoven and its continuation left to the Cinema in the Years 1990.
