The castle of Cangé
According to the site of Saint-Avertin
The castle of Cangé was built at the 13th century for a tourangelle family, of Andigné. It is located within a park of fifteen hectares on the slope at the east of the city, thus dominating the valley of Expensive.
Several dynasties of reputation occupied successively the castle:
-
of Andigné (1200-1400);
- Montmorin (1400-1489);
- Coningham (1489-1679);
- Panon Desbassayns de Richemont (1832-1870);
- Pourtalès (XIXe century).
Gilbert Imbert de Chastres, mayor of Turns, occupied the castle, like four mayors of Saint-Avertin: Viot Prudhomme (? - 1832), the baron Paul de Richemont (1832 -?) , Maurice Cottier (1870 -?) and the count Paul de Pourtalès.
During second world war, the castle of Cangé was requisitioned during five days by the president Albert Lebrun, like by the services of the Presidency of the Republic. Two councils of the ministers were held June 12th and 13rd 1940 there. After the war, its owner left it with the abandonment. A fire devastated it in the night from June 20th to 21st 1978. The property was finally repurchased by the commune of Saint-Avertin in 1980. Most of the castle remains in spite of very inaccessible, work of restoration not being completed to date. The whole of the building remains prohibited with the public.
The dependences as well as the vast park of the castle accommodate the recreational center of the city regularly, the council school of music as well as many associations. Several events are regularly organized there throughout the year thanks to a great number of installations: circuit of stunt bike, plays, etc
