Saint-Andrew church of Lille

The church Saint-Andrew of Lille bearing the name of the saint, classified Historic building, is located street Royale at Lille, in the district of the Vieux-Lille. Its construction was spread out XVIIIe at the XIXe century thanks to the contribution of two architects: Thomas-Joseph Gombert and Louis-Marie Shoe-maker.

History

The parish church Saint-Andrew existed since XIIIe century but was located at the Saint-Andrew rampart. Damaged by shells at the time of the seat of the Austrians in 1708, it is finally destroyed in 1784. One then uses the vault of the convent of the exposed Carmelite friars, street Royale, which will be renamed in parish church Saint-Andrew. The exposed Carmes had called upon the architect Thomas-Joseph Gombert for the construction of their vault. Work begins from 1701 to 1724, then begin again of 1753 to 1758. In 1887, a turn-bell-tower is added by the architect Louis-Marie Cordonnier.

Description

The frontage of the church is out of calcareous stone of size. One can observe two superimposed orders: ionic and Corinthian. The turn-bell-tower is out of brick and stone with a metal dome at the top. The side walls are out of brick and the roof out of slate. The church, of plan lengthened with three vessels, is made by:
  • a Nave of six spans,
  • a chorus of three spans,
  • and Sides finished by a Absidiole.

Inside, while turning to the principal door, one can see has and an S interlaced in the honor of Saint Andre and above, the organ. On both sides of the principal door, are two tables of Otto Van Veen: on the left, " Worship of the mages" and on the right, " Presentation of the Jesus child to the temple". One can see many tables of which a table of Arnould de Vuez " Cure of the paralytique". The pulpit to be preached is out of wood cut with a decoration in mezzo-relievo carved in 1768 by Jean-Baptiste Joseph Danezan. It is a true small jewel: draped of a suspended tapestry an angel holding with the right hand a cross and in the left hand dominates a trumpet.
