History
The Middle Ages
Under the direction of Holy Frobert, the monks of the Abbaye of Montier-the-That founded the village of Saint-Andrew which developed around its church of the 16th century. This one presents a gate known as “of the market-gardeners” decorated with garlands of fruit and vegetables attesting that at that time, the village was already famous for the culture of vegetables and the product of its orchards. It should be noted that the qualifier “the Orchards” was authorized by a decree of February 4th, 1919. A sentence of the échevinage of the close town of Troyes granted to the inhabitants, on January 28th, 1559, the right of market in the street of the grocer for their vegetables. Saint-Andrew was located extra-muros , i.e. apart from the fortifications of the town of Troyes and certain recent collapses proved that an important network of undergrounds was to make it possible to the occupants of the abbey to find safety inside the Trojan walls. During several centuries, the commune did not know significant evolution, its rural vocation not allowing to find an expansion of the type industrial and commercial whose Troyes had the monopoly then.
20th century
After the Second world war, a new rise was impelled following the establishment of a factory manufacturing of the metal posts, the Petitjean Establishments. In the same way, on the commercial plan, a large surface Carrefour proposed new services with the whole of the agglomeration. So a significant development on the level of town planning caused the contribution of a very young new population. Reception facilities were established giving to Saint-Andrew the indication of a modern commune. The construction of a college of secondary education gave the possibility of developing teaching beyond the already built elementary schools. Thus, one can note that the progression of the population was carried out on a rate/rhythm which accelerated, strongly, in the 2nd part of the 20th century.
The most significant progression was carried out in the Années 1930 which saw developing mechanical textile industry causing the creation of factories and workshops of clothes industry, of Bonneterie in particular. Today, Saint-Andrew continues its development and ensures its inhabitants of the cultural, sporting and social equipment of good quality. A theater of 300 places (Gerard-Philippe space) gives to the commune a new dimension, within the framework of the inter-commune vocation of the Communauté of agglomeration Troyenne.
