History
At the time Gallic, the inhabitants of the mauges were Ambilatres.
Ambilatres (Ambiliati at Jules César) were Celtic people de Gaulle located at the south of Basse-Loire, in the Armorican solid mass (between the current departments of the Vendée, Loire-Atlantique and Maine-et-Loire). During the creation of the Roman provinces de Gaulle, their territory is attached (between 16 and 13 before Jesus-Christ) to the civitas of Pictons (capital: Lemonum, current Poitiers), this in thanks with old allies at the time of the conquest of Gaules.
==L' old Name of Saint-André==
Many Celtic traces still announced to last century the seniority of the agglomeration. Menhirs alas! disappeared, whose some toponyms perpetuate only the memory. Doctor Michel Gruet had in 1967 statement in his " Inventory of the Megaliths of France " in collaboration with Joseph Chéné: Raised stone, right stone, the stone badante, stone with the cats, etc…

What one would like to know, it is the denomination which Saint-Andrew carried at that time if moved back. There was with three kilometers Espetvan place planted of coppice, today Saint Macaire in mauges, and to three or four miles Ségora (Stronghold Sauvin - Villeneuve). On the antique sees which led from Poitiers to Nantes, Saint-Andrew was last the stages of pictons before entering to Andecaves or Namnettes, a station border all in all, which already without doubts its Celtic name evoked.
It is known that the Macaire monk was at the 5th century the large apostle of Mauges and that it had many disciples to come to build their hermitage in the immediate radiation of his moutier. It was one of the latter probably which évangélisa our territory and placed it under the patronage of Saint-Andrew.
The first historical mention that we have of our parish finds in a évêché cartulaire of Poitiers, the Large Gauthier: Parochia Sancti Andrœ .There also existed with the Files of Maine and the Loire, series E1123, a last act in August 1259 between Guy de Chemillé and Renauld of the Bar, which acquires first " the pastures wood and close to Gouberte located in the parish of sancti andrœ ". Depending in this time there on the diocese on Poitiers, Saint Andre thereafter formed part, of 1317 to 1648, the diocese of Maillezais, then diocese of the La Rochelle until the Legal settlement. Saint Andre raised of the deanery of SAINT LAURENT on separates, and of archidiaconné of Fontenay the count.
Saint Andre becomes walk
When new geographical and administrative divisions appeared towards the end of the Middle Ages, Saint Andre became then of walk. Because the locality formed part of the common steps of Poitou and Anjou, which was worth to him to be pulled about during several centuries between the laws and habits of two provinces different and delivered to arbitrary from a twisted and expensive jurisprudence. With XVIIe and 18th centuries the false salt makers will pullulate with saint Andre. In Poitou, redimé country of Gabelle, strong was temptation to get for very cheap a brought salt of Brittany by Renaudière, to go to resell it with large benefit with Cholet and especially with Saint Macaire which was of Anjou, country of large Gabelle where salt was extremely expensive. Also the brigade of gabelous establish by the King in their Borough had it extremely to make with Marchetons de Saint Andre, as one called formerly people of the steps.
