Saint-Andéol-the-castle

Saint-Andéol-the-Castle is a common French, located in the department of the the Rhone and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

History

They are sisters who formed St Andéol the castle in the current of the 7th century. It was at the time only one convent called SANCTUS ANDEOLUS which was located in the middle of a wood on a small hill. The buildings of the church are not so old. The women who created this religious community were made call “the Ladies of wood”.

This convent was the core whose the village St Andéol the castle left. This village was in the past surrounded by ditches and ramparts furnished with turns with distances in distances. There were two doors: one with raising and the other with the setting one. Of all that there remain only some scattered ruins.

In 1814, prince de Hesse Hombourg, Austrian general, thinking according to the chart of making St Andéol (the castle) an advantageous station for the guard of the town of Lyon, directed his 3.000 soldiers there. But which surprise when it arrived on the ground and that it saw only ruins. It was thus obliged to fold up its troops on Givors (from where the street name: Rise of the Austrians).

It remains today of the old castle: a vault buried across the street, another in the wall, composts, the door at the entry of the village.
