Saint-Épain

Saint-Épain is a common French of the department of Indre-et-Loire, in the area Center. The surface of the commune is one of largest of Indre-et-Loire.

Its inhabitants is called the Saint-epinois, Saint-epinoises .

Geography

History

  • Several sites were occupied, in particular in the natural habitats which are the troglodytic cellars. The borough was established there because, the Gallo-Roman way Turn-Poitiers crossed the river “Manse” with ford of the river.
  • Saint-Epain was named at the 8th Brigogalus century. Celtic name of root and Gallic origin, Briga “fortress”, “height”, “strong castle”, and Ialo, of the same origin indicating “place”, “clearing”, “field”. Brigogalus resulting in “strengthened place”. It is as from the 11th century that the name of the city takes a form close to its current form, name of the Saint-Epain martyr: Sanctus Spanus in 1022.
  • Epain, wire of Moor was converted and baptized about year 390.
  • Dénommé Saint-Espain until XVIIIe, the " s" disappears after the Revolution.
  • Saint-Epain, châtellenie and prévôté, concerned the King because of the Castle of Chinon.
  • In 1790 - 1794, Saint-Épain annexed the common Montgauger.

Places and monuments

  • Castle montgoger: Important feudal castle. Two fires (1883 and 1943) were to reduce it to the state ruins. The King Louis XIII speaks about this residence like “beautiful and strong well built castle, of so beautiful and splendid structure which it would be worthy of our stay, being one of the most beautiful houses of our kingdom”.
  • Church, 12th century. Classified historic building in 1913.
  • the porch. Strengthened enclosure, rebuilt at the 15th century.
  • Our lady of lorette. Vault dug in the rock.
