Saintélyon

The Saintélyon is one running night raid between the towns of Saint-Etienne and Lyon, distant of 68 km. It is a very popular Race on foot into individual or relay by teams of 2,3 or 4 people.

This race takes place each year at the beginning of December.

History

In 1951, touring cyclists inhabitant of Saint-Etienne and Lyoneses decide to organize a pedestrian Randonnée Hiver nale of 60 km, during two days, while following the GR. 7. With the passing of years, the excursion becomes a competition of long walk 63,2 km, alternating one year out of two the direction of the course between the two cities. The competitors will be authorized to run only in 1977, surfant on the success of the jogging in the Années 1970.

In 1990, snow constrained the organizers to stop the race with height of Holy-Catherine but 80 runners will go nevertheless until the end. The organizers then create in 1991 the possibility of traversing the distance in relay and systematize the departure in Saint-Etienne at midnight.

Between 1995 and 2001, the organization decides to propose the test only every two years because of difficulty of Logistique, then it becomes again annual with the assistance of company doctors. The year 2002 gives one will have additional with the race thanks to the partnership with the Telethon. In 2004, the race is modified, passing at a distance of 68 km between the Expo Park of Saint-Etienne and the sport hall of Gerland.

Large winners of Saintélyon

  • Michel Delore, journalist and writer, gained 8 times the test between 1970 and 1980, either goes from there, or in race. In race it establishes a first record of reference to 5:20 in 1978.
  • Gerard Petit holds the record of the old distance in the Lyon-Saint-Etienne direction in 4:47.
  • Béatrice Reymann carries out the female record of the old distance in 5:09 at the time of the edition 1993.
  • Franck Proîetto beats the male record of the old distance in 4:19 in 1994, which will never be beaten until the change of distance.
  • Jerome Trottet gains the test 5 times: in 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2002 at the old distance and in 2005 at the new distance.
