Saimaa

The lake Saimaa , in Swedish Saimen , is a Finnish lake located in the areas of Savonie of the South and Karelia of North of the Finland-Eastern province of and the area of Karelia of the South of the province of Finland-Southerner.

Geography

With a surface of 1377.05 km2, the lake Saimaa is largest of Finland and the fifth of Europe.

The main cities bordering the lake are Lappeenranta, Imatra, Savonlinna and Mikkeli. The emissary of Saimaa, the river Vuoksi, runs out towards the Lac Ladoga located at south-east.

De Lappeenranta with Vyborg, the Canal Saimaa connects the lake to the Golfe of Finland. Other channels connect the lake Saimaa to other lakes moreover small size, thus forming a network of inland waterways allowing the transport of wood, the ore, metals, the Pulp paper and other goods as well as tourists.
