Sailendra

One knows the name of Sailendra (also written Çailendra ) by 3 inscriptions, found in two different areas:

Java

The first inscription to mention the name of Sailendra was found in the village of Sojomerto, on the northern coast of the center of the island. One dated it from the medium of the VIIe century.

The second inscription, found close to the village of Kalasan in the center of Java, engraved on the stone in writing pre Devanagari and gone back to 778 after J.C., reports the foundation, in the Kalaga village, by a Sailendra sovereign, of a temple associated with a monastery.

Kings Sailendra reigned on part of the center of Java until the end of the 9th century. For this period, many Buddhist monuments were built such as:

  • Borobodur, Mendut and Pawon in the plain of Kedu in the North-West of Yogyakarta
  • Kalasan in the east of Yogyakarta
  • of other temples close to Yogyakarta.

From this time also construction goes back to monuments shivaites, of which in particular Prambanan.

Some members of the Sailendra dynasty:

  • Samaratungga or Pramodawardani
  • Sri Kaluhunan, wire of Samaratungga.
