Sail-under-Couzan

Sail-under-Couzan is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps.

Geography

History

To the 11th century, the priory of Sail-under-Couzan belonged to the barons de Semur. The castle of Couzan, sits of the first baronnie of the Forez, would date from the same time. It belonged initially to the house of Damas, then passed to the Lévis during the 15th century.

  • the Château of Couzan is a medieval fortress built on a rock headland. It was built at the 11th century by the first lords of Couzan. It is a remarkable example of defensive military architecture of the Moyen-âge. It offers an exceptional panoramic sight, on most of the plain of Drill, on the valley boxes of Lignon, the Monts of Drill and the Monts of the Lyonese.
