Saignelégier
Saignelégier is a common Suisse of the Canton of the Jura and Chef-lieu of the District of the Frank-Mountains.
Geography
At an altitude of approximately 980 m, the commune of Saignelégier , is located at 25 km of La Chaux-de-Fonds and at 32 km of Delémont and is the chief town of the Frank-Mountains. It is a center of regional tourist activities of summer and winter. The village was built in a light depression of plate franc-mountain dweller, in overhang of the deeply cut out valley of the Doubs. It is separated from the Pommerats in north by High Bémont (1075 m). At the south, the highest point (1088 m) is located in-top of the Chaumont . On the communal territory two zones of marsh are: the Pond of Gruère and the Pond of Royes.The following hamlets belong to the commune: Cerlatez (1003 m), Theurre (1012 m) and Chaumont (1044 m).
History
The village is mentioned for the first time in 1382 under the name of Sonnelegilier, then of Saigneligier in 1454. Saignelégier depended initially on the parish of Montfaucon. A vault was established there as of 1397. Its position in the center of the Frank-Mountains made of Saignelégier the place where the businesses were treated and justice went; the priest of Montfaucon settled in 1594 there. Saignelégier was set up in independent parish in 1629. The village became the residence of the lords of the manor of the Seigniory of the Frank-Mountain of Wood at the XVIIe century.
Of 1793 with 1815, Saignelégier belonged to the France, within the department of the Mount-Terrible , then, starting from 1800, of the department of the Haut-Rhin, to which the department of the Mount-Terrible was attached. By decision of the Congress of Vienna, the territory of old the Evêché of Basle was allotted to the Canton of Bern, in 1815. At the 19th century, Saignelégier became the seat of the prefecture of the District of the Frank-Mountains. Since January 1979, Saignelégier belongs to the Canton of the Jura.
The armorial bearings of noble of Spiegelberg (mirror, mountain) became later those of the District of the Frank-Mountains and the commune of Saignelégier.
