Sagouin is a Romance written by François Mauriac, in four parts.
One can suppose that the action occurs towards 1920.
Characters
- Guillaume (called Guillou ): main character of the novel, teenager considered as " dégénéré" and insulted " sagouin".
- Grinding Paule, then Paule de Cernès : mother of Guillaume, niece of a former mayor of Bordeaux, it was marked wrongly to have relations with a priest.
- Baron Galéas de Cernès : husband of Paule, father of Guillaume, presents signs of backwardness.
- Baroness of Rings : mother of the baron Galéas de Cernès (as well as Georges of Cernès and Yolande, countess of Arbis), mother-in-law of Paule and grandmother of Guillaume, opposes Paule savagely.
- Robert Bordered : teacher. The family of Rings tries to entrust Guillaume to him. The baroness of Rings essuie a refusal. Paule testing again, obtains an interview between her son and him. He will however refuse to deal with Guillaume, in spite of the amount of money which would have been allotted to him.
- Léone Bordered : woman of Robert Bordered, teacher.
- Fräulein : controlling of the baron Galéas de Cernès then of Guillaume. One allots also the pieces of housework to him. Particularly attached to Guillaume and his father, she will be also opposed she to Paule.

- Adhémar de Cernès : husband of the baroness of Rings, father of three children: Galéas de Cernès, Georges de Cernès and of Yolande, countess of Arbis. Deceased.
- Georges de Cernès : brother of the baron de Cernès. Deceased.
- Yolande, countess of Arbis : sister of the baron and Georges, it and her family seems to live in Paris and to be preferred of the baroness of Rings.
