Safed

Safed (Hebrew: צפת Tzfat ; Arab: صفد Safad; also called Zefat, Tsfat, Zfat, Safad, Safes, Safet, Tzfat, etc) are a city located in the north of Israel at an altitude of 900 meters at the top of the sea level, and one of its four Jewish Holy Cities, with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tibériade.

History

The city, or at least its site, was founded according to the tradition by Sem, one of three wire of Noah, which studied there readily with his/her son Eber, but Safed developed with the proportions of a city only at the era of the Roman occupation.

It is particularly important in the history of the Judaïsme, becoming the refuge many scholars following the expulsion of the Jews of Spain in 1492, and fact one of the great centers of the Kabbale, collecting scientists as famous as Moïse Cordovero or Isaac Louria, but also of the Halakha, since Yossef Karo also resided at it.

Safed regained nowadays in popularity, and is become again a center of Jewish studies. It is also an artistic center, with its famous paved streets.
