History
During more than two decades the Mariners of Seattle played in dull the Kingdome. But in 1999 the Mariners entered a new enclosure of Base-ball, Safeco Field. In the years 1990, Kingdome had become a stage obsolete and damaged for the Mariners of Seattle. Many individuals and organizations started to work to obtain a new stage with the team. After several years of negotiations, the team decided to build a new residence. The March 30th 1994, the manager of the County of King, Gary Locke, named a group of architects, engineers and contractors to evaluate the need to build a new stage and to replace the Kingdome which worsened quickly. Many has fears that the Mariners leave Seattle if a new stage were not built. In January 1995, the group of 28 members recommended to the Council of the County of King which the public should be implied with the financing of the project. The group concluded that an increase in the tax of sale of .01% would be sufficient to finance the stage. The Comté of King held a special election the September 19th 1995, requiring of the population this increase in the tax of sale. Measurement was refused little.
A special session of the legislature of the state of Washington was called, and the October 14th, a new package of income was authorized. The stage would be financed by a credit against the tax of sale, the funds of the lottery of Washington, a tax of .3% on the restaurants and the bars and other funding source. The following week, the Council of the County of King voted to approve this measure and created Washington State Major League Public Baseball Facilities District, which would have the stage and would supervise its construction. The January 29th 1996, the firm NBBJ which is based with Seattle is chosen by the Public Facilities District to conceive the plans of the project.
The September 9th 1996, the site was selected for the new stage, just in the south of the Kingdome. At the end of the autumn, several members of the Council of the County of King wrote a letter with the Mariners of Seattle, informant whom they did not believe that the public money should finance this project. In answer, the Mariners of Seattle held a press conference stating that they would sell the team, or would move the team of Seattle. After a public scandal, the Council voted to reaffirm their co-operation with the Mariners by building a new stage.
Built beside the Kingdome, the building site is officially inaugurated the March 8th 1997 with the star Ken Griffey Jr. in front of 30.000 fans. The companies Hunt-Kiewit (Huber, Hunt and Nichols, Inc. and Kiewit Company Construction), Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire and The Erection Company Inc. (roof) are with the load of the building site according to plans of the architects from the NBBJ and 360 Architecture. Safeco followed the same néo-traditional model as each new stage of Base-ball builds in the years 1990. It has a brick frontage, a natural lawn (installed the May 24th 1999), and a sliding roof. The company Safeco Corporation bought the name of the stage the June 4th 1998 for $40 million USD over 20 years thus giving its name, Safeco Field. The " Safe" had cost $517,6 million USD (expensive of the league).
A crowd of 47.000 people filled the platforms for the day with her inauguration, the July 15th 1999 with the first match of the Mariners against the San Diego Padres but Padres gained 3 to 2. The seats are distributed on three stages which surround the three quarters of the ground. Steps and a table of the scores/messages are located above the bullpens in the left field (left field). More steps are located in the central field (centerfield). Above these seats is located the principal video display board. The retractable roof of Safeco Field makes it possible to the spectators to remain dry during the rainy days of the season. The retractable roof can cover the whole ground but does not lock up it, giving him a feeling of outdoor. When the roof is opened, it rests above and behind the seats of the right field. The structure covers almost 9 acres (36 400 meters ²), weighs 22 million books and contains enough steel to raise a skyscraper of 55 stages. The three mobile panels slip on 128 steel wheels actuated by 96 electrical motors of ten horses of power. It is closed or opened in 10-20 minutes (depends on the wind and the climatic conditions).
The stage organized great events like the Match of stars of the major League of baseball 2001 in July 2001, the Seattle Bowl (December 27th 2001), and WWE WrestleMania XIX, the March 30th 2003, which brought together 54.097 spectators.
