Safarir

Safarir is a magazine of humor Québécois founded by Sylvain Bolduc, Michel Morin and Serge Boisvert DeNevers in October 1987. The monthly magazine offers contents made up of texts, photographs, illustrations and humorous Cartoon on various aspects of the Québécois and American popular culture, amongst other things television, the cinema and the popular music.

History

In September 1999 (n° 136), Yvon Landry becomes editor association following the departure of Claude Desrochers, who was editor association during more than 110 numbers, and the data base takes more place. In July 2001, the drafting leaves Old man-Quebec for Old man-Montreal. Its current offices are located on the Boulevard the St. Lawrence, near the river. Safarir recruits at the same time a new famous artistic director in the field of the magazine (Eric Monette, of Kerozen Communications) and a new editor association joint soon with the team (Michel Viau, specialist as a Québécois cartoon and author of the BDQ , a repertory of all the publications of Québécois data bases.). Safarir benefits from it to recover its logo of origin. In 2005, Safarir publishes its 200e number.

Artists

Safarir counts now a score of collaborators freelance journalists. With the passing of years, several Québécois professional bedeists were published in its pages: Serge Boisvert DeNevers, Mario Inhabitant of Saint Malo, Denis Narrow part, Jean Morin, Jacques Lamontagne, Marc Cuadrado, Serge Gaboury, Jean-Paul Eid, Christian Daigle, Claude Bordeleau, Dany Lavoie, Jean-Nicolas Valley, Victor Brideau, and Eric Thériault. It is in the pages of Safarir that the series was created the Navels by Delaf and Dubuc.
  • Note: After more than 15 years of service, Mario Malouin does not form any more part of Safarir, it works now at Délire.
  • Note: Serge Boisvert DeNevers is editor associated since creation with the magazine.
  • Note: Current editor association is Michel Bouchard, who succeeded Frederic Antoine in 2007.

Sales and format

At the beginning, it is printed in black and white on a paper newsprint and is drawn with: 10000 specimens. In a few years, Safarir is classified among monthly magazines the most sold in kiosk. About 1990, pulling increases with: 80000 specimens, on glazed paper and colors then towards 1996 the sales kiosk turn around: 70000, but for ten years they have been declining constant. Recently, editor association Sylvain Bolduc declared with the newspaper Montreal Campus which it sold on average: 32000 copies per month. However, the sales continue to decline.

Other editions

In the middle of the Years 1990, new editions for the foreigner are tried: Saf Europe (3 numbers in 1995) and in Nuts (10 numbers in 1997-98 intended for the anglophone US market). These experiments do not find their public and close.

Competition

In April 1995, its only candidate in the magazines of humor, the magazine Hook (founded in 1979) firm its doors after 189 numbers. A record of longevity which will be exceeded by Safarir only in 2004. Today the strongest competition with the magazine is the semi-monthly Délire .

Controversies

In July 1998, Safarir makes a parody of the magazine 7 Days. The owners of this one continue Safarir and the number is withdrawn from the market. The business makes great noise and Safarir makes the news of the day in the media.

The special ones and gadgets

A certain year, Safarir left the series Cédérom Saf-TV. It left six Saf-TV. Besides Safarir published several out of the ordinary like the “Drôlement prickles”, “You want to laugh? ” and two parodies of Harry Potter named “Yarry Poster and the secrecy of the 11 ingredients” and “Yarry Poster and the Order of the turkey” like 2 albums of Mr. Danger : The Guide of survival for null the 1 and 2 and one of Djeezus : The Bible in madness . Safarir sells also clothing. (Ref. necessary) With the passing of years, Safarir offered to its readers a crowd of comic premiums: counterfeit bills of bank and lotteries, booklets sets of themes, parodies of magazines and labels, etc
