Sacred music

The sacred music (one says spiritual music sometimes ) gathers the musical genres associated in one way or another with the religious practices with a given social group. The concept is thus opposed to that Musique profane.

  • the sacred music is frequently vocal, when it uses, or is inspired, of the texts considered as crowned.

For example, of the Psalm S, the Gregorian chant, a Oratorio, Negro spiritual S, etc, constitutes sacred music.
the vocal sacred music can be constant by an instrumental accompaniment ; in the contrary case, one says that she is interpreted “has cappella”.

  • But the sacred music can be also instrumental, i.e., exclusively intended for the instruments.

- Either because it is simply associated with a ritual of spiritual nature.
For example, in the Baroque music, a sonata of church, also called “ Sonata da chiesa ”, must be necessarily analyzed like sacred music,
- Either because it is intended for a Musical instrument traditionally reserved for a crowned use. That can be the case of the organ, instrument usually devoted to the accompaniment of the Christian liturgy.

Classical music

The erudite Western music (or Classical music) is almost exclusively crowned throughout all Moyen-âge.

The Roman Catholic church devoted some documents magistériels to the sacred music, whose Tra Sollecitudini and Musica Sacræ of Magpie X and Pie XII, and counts a pontifical Institut of sacred music which deals with the sacred music in its center.
