If the Heart of God or Jesus is evoked of old source in the Chrétienté, the worship of the Sacré-coeur was really spread only at the 17th century. It exists there intimate bonds between the Sacred Heart and the Eucharistie.

Origins

The tradition of the Sacred Heart finds its origin with the apostle Saint Jean who rested on the heart of Jesus during Cène (Evangile according to St Jean 13,23) and on the transpierced Heart of Jesus at the time of Passion (Evangile according to St Jean 19,34-37). Thereafter, about many saints spoke about the Heart of the Christ, such holy Catherine of His, holy François Dirty, etc

XVIIe century

Formerly, the Cœur did not symbolize so much the body of the Affectivité and the emotion S, like it does it today, only the seat of any mental activity in an undifferentiated way. At the beginning, the irruption of a worship of the Raison will worry Rome.

However at that time, at Coutances, the future Saint Jean Eudes (1601 - 1680) set up the elements of a Culte of the Heart of the Virgin Mary then of that of Jesus in reaction at this current.

The Catholic church was considered consolidated in the introduction of this worship following the appearances that Marguerite-Marie Alacoque (proclaimed later holy) had of Jesus as of 1673 with Paray-le-Monial. Saint Claude Colombière helped holy Marguerite-Marie Alacoque to spread this worship of the Sacred Heart.

Magpie IX

In 1856, the Pope Pie IX extends the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church. Three Encyclique S confirm the attachment of the Church to this devotion: Annum Sacrum (Leon XIII - 1899), Miserentissimus Redemptor (Black and white XI - 1928) and Haurietis Aquas (Pie XII - 1956)

These circumstances can be compared with those which governed the proclamation by the Catholic church of the Dogme of the Immaculate Conception which was followed chronologically by the visions of Bernadette Soubirous.

June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The Christian families applied to the “establishment of the Sacred Heart” in their houses and their countries.
