Sacramento

The town of Sacramento is the capital of the State of California, with the the United States. It was founded in December 1848 by John Sutter. Sacramento developed starting from the Gold rush, during which it was a shopping mall and agricultural important. Today the city develops quickly and its agglomeration counts 2.187.694 inhabitants. It is called Sacto or Sac by its inhabitants. The nickname River City is also used, like that of Sacratomato .

Geography

The Bureau of the Census of the United States indicates that the city has an total surface area of 257 km ² (251,6 km ² of grounds and 5,4 km ² composed of water levels, are 2,1%.) The population in 2000 was of 407.018 inhabitants, to compare with that of 1980 (275 741 inhabitants). Currently it is estimated that 454.330 people reside in the city. The population density is of 651,5 hab/km ².

The city is located at the confluence of the Sacramento and the American River and has a port connected to the Baie of San Francisco by a channel passing through the Baie of Suisin and the Delta of Sacremento. It is the center of the Vallée of Sacramento on the level of the rail-bound and river transports of the fruits, vegetables, of rice and ox and the dairy products. Food industry is one of major industries of the area.

Most of the territory in the west of the city, in the County of Yolo, is an easily flooded basin. The urban surface of Sacramento thus extends only to 6 km in the west from the downtown area with West Sacramento, but up to 50 km in the North-East and the east, to the buttresses of the Sierra Nevada, and to 16 km in the south in the countryside.

History

The Amerindian tribes Miwok, Shonommey and Maidu lived in the area during thousands of years but left few traces of their existence. The explorer Gabriel Moraga discovered and named the Valley of Sacramento and his river according to the Spanish word meaning " sacrement" (that of the catholic eucharistie, more precisely) in 1806 or 1808. The pioneer John Sutter arrived since Liestal at Sacramenta with other colonists in August 1839 and establishes there the commercial colony Sutter' S Fort in 1840. When gold was there discovered eight years later per James W. Marshall with Coloma, of many gold diggers arrived at Sacramento and the population of the city strongly increased (Mushroom town). John Sutter drew up the plans of the city and re-elected it according to the Sacramento river for trade names, and against the wishes of his/her father.

Sacramento is oldest built-in Ville of California. During the years the 1850 valley was devastated by floods, fires and cholera epidemics; but the city persisted and the city quickly reached the number of 10.000 inhabitants. The law named Sacramento capital of the State of California in 1854.

The town of Sacramento shelters two professional franknesses from basketball, most known being the Sacramento Kings in NBA and the other female team of basketball the Monarchs of Sacramento WNBA with which it divides their room, the Arco Arena.
