A peripheral data processing is a generic term given to the components of Computer material ensuring the communications between the Central processing unit of the Ordinateur and the outside world.

One distinguishes three types of peripheral:

  • the peripheral of entry make it possible to enter information the computer;
  • the peripheral of exit make it possible to leave information the computer;
  • the peripheral of input-output allow bidirectional communications.

The majority of the peripherals are removable, i.e. they can be disconnected from the central processing unit without preventing this one from functioning (it is sometimes necessary to extinguish the computer before withdrawing the peripheral).

On the microcomputers, all the peripherals are connected to the mother chart by a connector which one inserts:

  • either in a port directly welded with the Mother chart
  • or in a port available onto a Expander card, itself plugged in on the mother chart. The expander card being removable, it is easy to replace it in the event of breakdown or of technological change.
