Sabor (official Croatian designation Hrvatski sabor , the traditional French term being Diet ) is the Parlement of the Republic of Croatia. Since the constitutional reform of the February 28th 2001 he is an assembly monocamérale composed of a maximum of 160 representatives elected by the vote for all for one duration 4 years. The plenary sessions proceed January 15th with the July 15th and September 15th with the December 15th.
The first session of multi-party Sabor, resulting from the first free elections of after-Communism, had taken place the May 30th 1990.
Until 2000 where the Croatia gave up the semi-presidential system by adapting an integral parliamentary system Sabor had been founded, according to the provisions of the Constitution of December 22nd 1990, like bicameral Parliament joining together a House of Commons (Zastupnički dom) and a Room of Comitats - areas - (Županijski dom).
Indeed, Sabor currently counts 34 women (23%), which does one of the Parliaments of Europe of them where the parity men/women is best respected.
The origin of Sabor is extremely old since one finds an embryo of Sabor to the Early middle ages, as of 753. In 925, Sabor, which at this time, was composed of noble and representatives of the clergy, approves the advent of Tomislav, first king of the Croats. Then, to the extinction of the dynasty in 1102, the kingdom is directed by a Ban (governor) (or viceroy) and is joined together with the Hungarian crown of Etienne Ier of Hungary: the king of Hungary, Coloman of Hungary, is then elected king of Croatia and Dalmatie to Biograd, in Sabor (Diète) of Biograd.
Thus Croatian Sabor appears, at the sides of the Althing Icelandic, formed around 930, among oldest Parliament of Europe, since the Sicily was equipped with it towards 1130 and the England towards 1300, this last being usually regarded as the prototype of the modern Parliament.
