Sablé-sur-Sarthe is a Commune Frenchwoman located in the department of the the Sarthe and the area of the Pays of the Loire.

Located in the south-western part of the Sarthe, it is in contact with the departments of the Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne. History of Sanded

An intense policy of installation resulted in a true bursting of the city out of its traditional limits, making pass its population of 6  000 with 13  500 in 25  years.

During many centuries, Sablé will remain before a a whole military fortress located particularly well, with the borders of the Maine and Anjou. It is safe from this fortress that will develop the borough whose population was to rise at the 15th century with close to 1  200 inhabitants. The current castle is built on the site of the old strong castle.

In XIIe and XIIIe century, the lord of Sanded on the Sarthe east Guillaume of the Rocks, seneshal of Anjou, lord of Sanded, Longué-Binoculars and Castle-of-Dormouse (born in 1165 - died in 1222). Beautiful father of Amaury de Craon, seneshal of Anjou and lord of Craon. They illustrated together in the Bataille of the Rock-with-Monks in 1214 against the English.

Under the Old Mode and until the French revolution, Sablé depended on the Pays of election of the Arrow.

The 18th century marks for Sablé one period of awakening. The borough becomes city, dominated by the castle that Colbert de Torcy, Marquis de Sablé, Foreign Minister under Louis XIV and nephew of Large Colbert, make build in the fields of the Desgots architect. At the end of the century, Sanded account 3  000 inhabitants. This rise abruptly will stop for the revolutionary period . The city then becomes a refuge for the Chouans.

The year 1809 will remain an essential date in the local history: Anthracite is discovered in the surroundings. Thanks to that, the Chaulage spreads and transforms agriculture. The exploitation of the Marble, until there artisanal, is modernized and the career becomes the first employer of Sanded and its surroundings with 1  500 paid!

The city changes, the port develops (22  000 tonnes/an). In its turn the arrival of the railroad in 1861 facilitates the exchanges largely. It supports the resumption of the industry of the marble and also causes the extension of the urbanization in direction of the station. Thus, in 1886, population reached 6  200 inhabitants.

The end of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century see to run out one period of stagnation-recession for the economy sabolienne. The two Great Wars, the rural migration, the primarily artisanal character of the local companies make that the city is maintained mainly in a role of agricultural market and shopping mall, in spite of the installation of Foundries folded up of the East after 1918. In 1929 Raphaël Elizé, Socialist and veterinary surgeon, is made elect mayor (first black mayor of France), function which he will exert until 1940 when he will be relieved by Kommandatur Nazi after his return of the demobilization. Veterinary Redevu, it will enter resistance but will be denounced then off-set in Buchenwald where it will die in January 1945 following a bombardment on the arms factory where it was affected with the forced labor. The base of this rise will be consisted the development of the industrial activity in the agroalimentary sectors, of metallurgical industries and the electrical material.

Castle of Sanded: technical center of BnF

Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Foreign Minister of Louis XIV, bought the castle of Sanded in 1711. Renovation works began in 1715 and continued until in 1728, but it is only in 1741 that was completed interior decoration. In 1978, the city of Sanded acquired of it to give it to the Minister of education main road for the use of the National library.

The will to save a high number of books supposes the application of particular techniques and the adaptation of more traditional techniques. The restoration of the books is declined in four stages:

  • the microreproduction.
  • chemical treatment
  • the restoration
  • the binding.

The microreproduction consists in photographing the works with a high ratio of reduction. A specialized workshop allows the systematic reproduction on Microfiche S of all the documents.

The chemical treatment has the role of treating by neutralizing the action of the acids which corrode paper and of reinforcing it.

The restoration consists in giving again with paper a mechanical resistance. It is the role of doubling using a transparent neutral material. The document is then ready to find an aspect closer to its aspect of origin.

The binding is intended to provide a protection of long life to these fragile papers.

The mission of the Center of Sanded is to contribute to the conservation of the inheritance printed and handwritten, modern or contemporary, and with its transmission with the future generations. The castle can be visited, each year, at the time of the European Journées of the inheritance in September.

  • the Annual Festival Baroque of Sanded.

Created in 1979, is one of the principal appointments baroque of the summer in France. It brings together the most prestigious artists with dimensions of young talented interpreters. One meets there Jordi Savall, the arpeggiata, the Musicians of Louvre, but also Matheus, Stradivaria or the Elyma unit. With 14 concerts in 4 days, the Festival of Sanded allows enivrer of music… or to discover some ignored works. Its Old Music and Dancing school accommodates trainees of the whole world, joined together around the best specialists in these disciplines.

  • Rockyssimôme : " Woodstock of the enfants"

Each year, 8000 small wolves find themselves in the splendid park of the castle of Sanded (the Sarthe) for 6 hours of musics and spectacles not-stop. They have from 3 to 12 years. Number of enter them arrive with the band of buddies of the Recreational center, great interbreeding of children of the cities, children of the fields, for an insane day of music! The next edition of this demonstration will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2006.

Sanded it is also a name: round, gilded and cracking, the " Shortbread cookie " of Sanded dry Gâteau pure butter is a delicious which makes the glory of the city.

Created in 1924 by Mr. Etienne, pastrycook, the " small sablé" seem to have an origin much older. One tells indeed, that in 1670, the marchioness of Sanded, Madeleine de Souvre, offered some to Sir, brother of Louis XIV, who them " found extremely with its convenance" !

Two Pâtissier S buildings perpetuate this tradition for the greatest pleasure of Saboliens and the many tourists who do not hesitate to make a turning to get this delicious speciality.

Sanded has maintained for several years the social, cultural and sporting exchanges with the town of Bückeburg in Germany located at a distance of 996 km. The municipal council of the young people of Sanded to installation since 1994 following the proposal and to the displacement of Mickael Beldroega then Mayor Junior a relation of dialog and exchange and the young people of Bückeburg. A municipal council of the young people with also be creates in 1995 in Bückeburg in order to optimize these annual exchanges aiming at maintaining the social actions, cultural, and collaboratives between the two partners cities.

Current events

  • Taken hostages of 23 people on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at the vocational school Charles Cros which did the one of many tv news. Fortunately the exaggerated depressive one slackened without damage the pupils and the two assistants of education. The claims were due to the despair of the taker of hostage vis-a-vis his long period of unemployment after having been professor in this same college. He asked to speak with Francois Fillon, former Mayor of the city.
