Saber
See also: Saber (homonymy)
The saber is a Knife of Estoc (which one uses the point) and of size (which one uses the edge). Generally curve, it has one edge (what distinguishes it from the sword), it can be used with one or two hands according to the type of saber.
Differences compared to the sword
A sword has a double edge; for this reason, it allows a greater freedom than the saber, but the refinement of the edges weakens the blade. Having one edge, the saber has a greater solidity (back of the broad blade) for a lower mass, which makes of it the ideal weapon for the cavalry.
Functional dissymmetry allows a dissymmetry of the form, whereas the sword must be symmetrical. The dissymmetry of the form even makes it possible moreover more easily to locate the edge of the back. The sabers are in fact frequently curved, which facilitates decladding. There exist however models has right blade; generally longer, they are intended for the heavy cavalry in order to widen the perimeter of attack.
Contrary to the sword, one can pose the hand on the back of the blade, which makes it possible to exert an additional pressure in certain cases (blocking of the blade of the adversary for example), but also provides a possibility of disarmament (seized judicious of the back of the blade).
