Saarijärvi

Saarijärvi is a city mid-west of the Finland, in the area of Finland-Power station.

Geography

The city, crossed by the main road 13 Jyväskylä- Kokkola, accounts at 65 km of the regional capital Jyväskylä and for 340 of Helsinki.

Nature is largely preserved, with in particular in the north of the commune the national park of Pyhä-Häkki. The forest and the lakes dominate the landscape, leaving nevertheless a little space at the cultivated zones, relatively more than in the remainder of the area.

The municipalities bordering are Kannonkoski in north, Äänekoski in the east, Uurainen in the south, Multia in south-west, Pylkönmäki in the west and Karstula in the North-West.

Population

The city knew its demographic explosion at the 19th century, passing from 1.380 inhabitants in 1749 with 14.404 in 1870, its historical records. After an important wave of emigration at the end of the 19th century, the population knew only weak variations during the 20th century, currently tending towards a light reduction. The commune passed under the symbolic threshold of the 10.000 inhabitants in October 2006.
