Demography

The inhabitants of Saône-et-Loire are the Saone-and-Loiriens . With a population of 544893 inhabitants, the department is the most populated Burgundy area. It is also this department which adds up the largest number of cities. However, the pattern of the settlement tends to desiquilibrer between is and western. Indeed, if the west of the department tends to be depopulated - in particular in the basin of Creusot-Montceau -, is served perfectly by the modern transportation routes, tends to gain inhabitants: Bresse bourgignonne, Mâconnais and Chalonnais). It is currently the Bresse bourgignonne, without notable big city, which, by its prosperity, gains the most inhabitants (opening of classes…). In the same way, Châlon-sur-saône preserves its statute of city the most populated with 52260 inhabitants (INSEE 2007). Mâcon, prefecture of the department, tends to gain inhabitants, in particular in his agglomeration (urban surface of 104000 inhabitants set out again on Ain, the Rhone and the Saône-et-Loire). The proximity of Lyon supported the use and the installation of many Lyoneses as well as the investments.

This blazon was drawn by Robert Louis, but forever used by the department.

“Burgundy-of-south”

In 2003, the president of the General advice proposed to re-elect the department in “Burgundy-of-south”. The advanced arguments were the lack of notoriety of the name Saône-et-Loire, the confusion induced with the Loire ch4ateau, opposed to the international notoriety of the Burgundy and the character hooker of southern , evoking the Mediterranean influence which goes up until the department.
La procedure does not seem to have succeeded. The expression “Burgundy-of-south” remains however used in the tourist domain. This term thus follows the same way as that of “Septimanie” proposed to re-elect the area Languedoc-Roussillon.
