S-meter

The S-meter is a Measuring instrument making it possible to visualize the power of the signal received by a radio operator receiver. This indicator is installed in the receivers radielectric, like the receivers Radioamateur S, the receivers Short wave, etc

Description

The S-meter generally consists of a Galvanomètre with mobile framework, controlled by a dedicated stage of the receiver. On the recent receivers, it is replaced by a Bargraphe integrated into the bill-poster LCD of the receiver.

Technique

The scale of force of the signal (S) evolved/moved of a qualitative system bringing back the force of the signal of S1 to S9 taking part in the system of code RST. An abstract quantitative convention defines S9 as being the equivalent in a level of entry of 50 µ Volt S at the entry of the antenna of the receiver, typically with a impedance of 50 Ohm S. According to this convention, with each unit or not S corresponds a report/ratio of power of 6 Décibel S (dB), roughly a report/ratio of power of four or one report/ratio of tension of two. Thus, a force of signal of S8 corresponds to roughly 25 microvolts. The signals stronger than S9 are given in dB, such as for example “S9 +50 dB”.
