Sébastokrator

Sébastokrator (in Greek Byzantine σεϐαστοκράτωρ / sebastokrátôr ), is an imperial title Byzantine created by the combination of sébastos and autokrator . One can translate it by “noble Master”; sebastos is also the translation of the Roman title of Auguste, and one can also translate it by that which has the capacity of Auguste .

It is the emperor Alexis I {{er}} Comnène which confers it for the first time on his/her brother Isaac Comnène, the direction while being then somewhat empty since the title underlines simply the relation between Alexis and Isaac. Under the dynasty of the Comnène, it is the most title granted wire and to brothers of the emperor.

Blue is the color which distinguishes the sébastokrator (in opposition to the imperial Pourpre): it is that of the ink with which it signs the official documents, of the silk cord to which its seal is attached, that still its shoes, although it was allowed to him to carry a red tunic of color.

The wife of the sébastokrator is the sébastokratorissa.

After 1204, the title is also included in the Latin Empire of the East.
