Biography
The worship of these three martyrs was born in a mysterious way. If it originated in Lisbon, it extended towards Coimbra, Braga, Oporto. Veríssimo is patron saint of the parishes of Paranhos, Valbom, Nevolgilde, Lagares (Felgueiras), Amarante. The oldest reference to this worship is in the martyrologist of Usuard (858). It could be that the saints were already in the calendars 200 years after their martyr. One continued to dedicate a worship to them during the Arab domination. Osberno, in an account on Conquest of Lisbon, evoked the ruins of the Sanctuaire which was dedicated to them. The life of these saints remains legendary. At the time of persecutions of the Roman Emperor Dioclétien, these three people presented themselves of their own will to the executor of the imperial edicts, to recognize their Christian faith . In spite of the threats, they refused to disavow their faith and were imprisoned. The judge made them torture: blows of Whip, Rest, iron nails (?), heated blades with white. The three saints always resisted, it then ordered to make them trail in all the city and to cut the throat of them. They were not not buried, but left grazes about it with the dogs and the birds. As the wild beasts did not touch the bodies, the judge decided to put them at the sea, the feet related to stones. The boats were not yet of return which the skins of the saints were found on the beach. The Chrétiens collected them and buried them. Today, the church Igreja back Santos of the monastery Mosteiro de Santos-o-Novo is drawn up on their burial.
In 1529 , the Commandeur Don Anna de Mendonça ordered to place the Relique S in a money trunk, on the right-sided of the principal furnace bridge, with the epitaph: “ Burial of the saint martyrs S. Verissimo, Maximum Santa & Iulia, children of a senator of Rome, come downtown this to receive the martyr, by the revelation of the Angel. Ci-to lie in this burial their own holy bodies, which suffered 1350 years ago and were brought in this residence. ”. In truth, no one cannot affirm with certainty the origin of these three saints. However, the Iconographie takes as a starting point the legend: the 3 martyrs are represented equipped with Roman clothing. One can see them on the triptych dating from the XVIIe, exposed in the church.
