São João Marcos
The city submerged by water of progress.
The historic site of Sain João Marcos today is historical heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Demolished and flooded in beginning of the year 40 by a company of electrical energy for widening of the stopping of Brook of Lages, São João Marcos - one of the cities most important of the cycle of the coffee of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in last century - will turn to the books of fall. Their ruins, in the 3rd District of Rio Claro (with 191 kilometers of Rio, in the South of the State), were reversed by the Institute Of the state of the Artistic and Cultural Inheritance (INEPAC), joined with two other terminals of the opulence of the coffee in the area: the Bridge Beautiful, of the century 19 - in rock of, that water leaves visible in estiagem - and a 180 year old church which resisted time - the igrejinha of the Farm of São Joaquim da Gramma - general headquarter of the comendador Joaquim Brèves, one of the more influential ground owners of the Empire would haunt.
One of the first urban cores reversed in the country, in 1939, when preserved the layout and the buildings in colonial style, Sain João Marcos was destombada in 1940 by Getúlio Vargas, for the Light (Canadian company nationalized in 1979) to raise the level of the Stopping of Flagstones and to increase the generation of energy in the factory of Sources. Even under the New State, the inhabitants resisted, they but finished while leaving in means with plunderings and demolitions buildings centuries 18 and 19. The city, established in 1739 by bandeirantes, had been broken gold of Minas Gerais and, then stronghold of Comendador Joaquim Jose de Souza Breves, of owner of 7.000 slaves and 100 coffee farms, littoral with Vale of Paraíba.
Many ruins of the city still can be seen with the margins of the stopping - between them foundations of the church and the College of Healthy João Marcos - thus water have finien not reaching the level envisaged.
