Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a trophy of Golf concerned every two years that dispute Europe and the United States in a tournament by teams.

The tournament

Ryder Cup begins its history in 1927, with an opposition between the Great Britain and the the United States. After nearly 40 years of American domination (the British assert themselves only in 1929,1933 and 1957), the Ireland was incorporated in the team of the Old man-continent. Europe takes over then as from 1979. Consequently, the competition is balanced. Ryder Cup is currently managed jointly by American PGA and European PGA.

The test lasts three days, of the Friday to Sunday. The first formation which reaches the score of 14 points and half, is declared gaining trophy.

The matches of Ryder Cup oppose players selected among teams of 12 golfeurs. Gaining each duel gains a point in the event of victory, and half-time with each player in the event of equality. Certain matches put at the catches two doublettes each team playing with 2 or 4 balls. These duels also bring back a point to gaining, half-time in the event of equality after 18 holes.

The days of Friday and Saturday are devoted to the matches by duets, Sunday is reserved for simple. Two types of matches proceed at the time of the competitions in duets:

  • Foursomes : the two players of the same team play alternatively the same ball. With each new hole, the player giving the departure is permuted.

  • Fourball or 4 balls, better ball : Each player plays his own ball. The best player of the four candidates gains the point for his team.

In the competitions of doubles, the captains have any latitude to define the teams. There is no obligation to make play a player of the team at least a match of doubles.

In the case of the simple ones, the whole of the players of a team plays a match.

the system of accounting used to determine the winner of a match at the time this competition is the Match-play. This one is based on the winners of each hole. The winner of a hole takes a point. the results of a match are presented in the following way:

  • equality (or all public garden): 1/2 point is allotted to each team.

  • 1 up or 2 up: the match went at the end of the 18 holes and gaining it finished with one or two holes in advance
  • 3 and 2, 5 and 4. : the players did not dispute all 18 hole. The gaining player carried out of more than points than there did not remain holes and thus the part is completed. For example, in case 3 and 2, it did not remain any more that two holes to be disputed and the gaining player carried out of three points.
