Ruvuma

The Ruvuma , in the past called Rovuma , is a river located in is of the Africa, and which forms during the major part of its course the border between the Tanzania and the Mozambique.

Situation

Low Ruvuma is formed by the junction in two branches of about equal importances, the Lujenda, newcomer of south-west, and another, newcomer of the west, which also bears the name of Ruvuma. It takes source on a high plate of 3000 feet, located at the east of the Lac Nyasa.

A bridge with the top of Ruvuma which would connect the Mozambique to the Tanzania was proposed since 1975, just after the independence of the Mozambique. A great number of work were proposed with the beginning of the year 1980, but “Unity Bridge” was never finished because of a lack of funds. In 2002, the two governments finally made an agreement authorizing the construction of a new bridge, length 600 meters, with the top of the river. Construction will be finished in 2008 and will cost 28 million American dollars. One can however note that it is currently possible to cross the river using a system of frontier runners located with dimensions Tanzanian, and using a good 4x4, for the periods of low level of water.
