Ruthless Records

Ruthless Records is the name of two different musical labels, one based with Chicago and publishing Punk rock'n'roll, the other based with Los Angeles and publishing Hip hop.

Ruthless Records (Chicago)

Oldest of the two labels, founded in 1981 by the Effigies, was not really an organized structure, but a name used by certain punk groups of 1981 to 1990: Big Black, the Effigies, End Result, Naked Raygun, Riffle Sport and Is urgent Overkill. The Effigies directed the label since its creation until 1984, where they found that the label diverted the group of its priorities. They then entrusted it to the founder of Big Black, Steve Albini, which directed it until its dissolution in 1990.

Ruthless Records (Los Angeles)

This label is created by Eazy-E and Jerry Heller in 1987. One allots to him the creation of the Gangsta rap. It made the promotion of local artists who became thereafter of the stars, like Dr. DRE, Ice Cube or DJ Yella.

In 1988, Eazy-E creates the group NWA. Other rappeurs, such as Above The Law, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, The D.O.C, BG Knocc Out & Gangsta Dresta, Michel 'the, HWA, CPO, Penthouse Players, Kokane, Po Broke & Lonley, Blood Off Abraham, Yomo & Maulky, Terri B., Jimmy Z., Blue Light, Chan, MC Ren, and JJ Fad joined the label thereafter.

After the death of Eazy-E in 1995, the label was taken again by his wife, Tomica Wright. Currently, Ruthless Records belongs to Atlantic Records.
